Better Training Starts Here

An Introduction

What if I told you strength training and endurance training was a good mix?

I’ll show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

First, Welcome to the EBF Cipressa Journal - S&C, Coaching & Training! Let me introduce myself, its important to know who’s words you are reading. My name is Rory, keen bike rider, trail runner, and anything else cycling/triathlon related. I’ll give you a brief introduction to my career so far; I am a former professional triathlete and multi-sport athlete. I’ve been a European under 23 Champion, won 3 National Cross Triathlon championships and represented GBR in 3 senior elite World Cross Triathlon Championships and 4 European Championships. I’ve raced all over the world, seen and trained in multiple high-performance environments. My current expertise is in strength and conditioning coaching for sport performance. I’ve coached across multiple sports ranging from novice athletes never having stepped into a gym or swung their leg over a saddle to athletes who have competed at major games. One thing you will learn about me if you keep reading this blog is, I am very honest, and I won’t wrap things in cotton wool. But that doesn’t mean I’m trying to create problems, quite the opposite. I’m quiet and one of the most friendly and approachable people you will meet, if you see me out and about riding say hello.

Racing XTERRA England, It was a tough day having raced the national championships the day before. I drove from Edinburgh to Surrey the night before!

Probably one of my finest moments, racing for GBR for the first time in 2012, winning ETU U23 Cross Triathlon Championships.

I joined the EBF team recently after completing an MSc in Strength and Conditioning at The University of Edinburgh and gaining NSCA - CSCS accreditation (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist). I’m here to share my knowledge with you, there are no secrets and I won’t try to hide anything. I’ll cover topics I find interesting not always strictly related to S&C. Some general ideas of the things I’ll start with are: strength training for exercise economy, asymmetries in sport and what to look for in a coach. However, if you have S&C/training topics you would like covered drop me an email at: rory@edinburghbikefitting.com and I’ll see what I can do. I won’t reference research, unless it’s in high demand and you’ll just have to trust me when I say I’m very much an evidence-based practitioner. The content will be based on my interpretation of current research, and like anything in this world people will disagree with me, interpret information in a different way and have their own opinions but that’s life and without it, sport wouldn’t progress.

The only real message I want you to leave knowing today is S&C and science isn’t just for professional athletes or people who race. The process is a journey, things don’t happen over night, there is no ‘best’ exercise; there are no shortcuts.

Remember! If you have training related questions or want to share anything don’t forget to join the EBF - Cipressa Cyclo Collective on Facebook, click here to find it. I can’t promise you’ll get an immediate reply, but you’ll get an answer within the day!

If you have read this far, thank you! I promise the posts in the future will be more interesting and not me just talking about me! In the meantime if you want more information about our coaching programmes click the button below.
